Neath Port Talbot Catering Services provide one million school meals a year. Our menus are carefully planned to meet the Welsh Nutritional Guidelines for school lunches by our catering managers, food advisers and saffron nutritional analysis system. Healthy School LunchesOur Catering Staff have undertaken nutrition training so pupils will be encouraged to eat nourishing vegetables or fruit daily and to make healthy choices.
It is our aim to ensure that all pupils can be provided with a healthy, nutritious meal and vegetarians and any special diet requests are catered for.
There is a hot main meal choice including a vegetarian option available daily plus a selection of vegetables, seasonal salads, a pasta option and whole meal bread. There is also a daily main pudding with an additional option of fruit bowl choice. A daily selection of chilled milk or water are available.
Overview
All primary school children in Wales will get free school meals by 2024.
This commitment is in response to the rising cost-of-living pressures on families and our shared ambitions of:
- tackling child poverty
- ensuring no child goes hungry in school
There are also wider benefits of free school meals, including:
- promoting healthy eating across the school
- increasing the variety of food options
- improving social skills at mealtimes
- improving behaviour and attainment
This will not affect older children who currently receive or are eligible to apply for free school meals.
Rollout
Your local authority will provide information on when the scheme will be rolled out in your child’s school. All school catering facilities are different and schools will need time to prepare. Many primary schools are carrying out work in their kitchens to be able to cater for a significantly greater number of school meals.
Registering for universal free school meals
You may be asked to register your child for universal free school meals.
This will enable your child’s school to take a headcount of the increased total number of children requiring meals. Your child’s school or local authority should give you more information on this over the coming months. This will not affect other associated benefits.
Contact your local authority for more information.
